Marking Bateman's directorial debut, the film stars Bateman as a middle-aged eighth grade dropout who enters the National Quill Spelling Bee. It also stars Allison Janney, Rachael Harris, Phillip Baker Hall, and Kathryn Hahn.
The film premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2013, and had a limited release in the United States on March 14, 2014.
Story :
Guy Trilby (Bateman), a 40-year-old middle school dropout gets his revenge by finding a loophole and attempting to win a spelling bee as an adult. Along the way, he befriends a female reporter and a young contestant whom he exposes to the wilder side of life, while learning a little about himself.

Andrew Dodge's screenplay for Bad Words first caught attention after making The Black List in 2011.Around this time, Jason Bateman's agent sent him screenplays for possible directorial work. "I said to my lit agent, 'Please don’t wait for me to have an opening in my acting schedule to pursue the directing stuff. Understand that I'm only acting to create the kind of relevance or capital necessary to get a directing job,'" explained Bateman. "It's really the only reason I've been acting for the last 20 years of this career."
In November 2012, actors Allison Janney and Phillip Baker Hall signed on to the film.
Principal photography lasted 29 days at the end of 2012 in Los Angeles, with the Sportsman's Lodge in the San Fernando Valley serving as the location of the national spelling bee final.Bad Words had its world premiere as part of the Special Presentation section of the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2013.
